The Parable of the Four Disciples

Four responses to one question. Not four scores, but four relationships to understanding.

This account appears in the transmission records of the Chan/Zen lineage — most notably the Denkoroku ("Transmission of the Lamp") — as the moment Bodhidharma, preparing to return to India or to die, tested the realization of his students before naming his successor.

He gathered his four principal disciples — Daofu, Zongchi, Daoyu, and Huike — and said: "The time has come for me to leave. Each of you, tell me what you have attained."

Daofu stepped forward first. "As I see it, truth is beyond both affirmation and negation, for this is how it moves and functions." Bodhidharma said, "You have attained my skin."

Zongchi, a nun, spoke next. "As I understand it, it is like a joyous glimpse of the Buddha-land of Akshobhya — seen once, and never seen again." Bodhidharma said, "You have attained my flesh."

Daoyu spoke third. "The four elements are all empty, and the five skandhas have no actual existence. There is not a single dharma to be grasped." Bodhidharma said, "You have attained my bones."

Huike, last, said nothing. He simply bowed deeply to his teacher and returned to stand silently in his place. Bodhidharma said, "You have attained my marrow."

Huike was named the Second Patriarch of Chan.

Translations of the three spoken answers vary across sources; the sequence and the four verdicts are consistent across the tradition.

Skin

Four students are asked what they've understood. Three explain it well. The fourth says nothing and bows — and is told he has grasped it most completely.

Flesh

The room already knows something is ending. Bodhidharma's voice doesn't announce departure so much as confirm what everyone had been arranging their attention around for weeks. One by one, three answers are gathered up like the room is being tidied before a long trip — sentences reaching for the exact right shape, each speaker watching Bodhidharma's face for the flicker that means close or not yet.

Then it is Huike's turn, and there is a pause with weight in it, the kind that makes the others glance sideways. No sentence arrives. Just the motion of a body lowering itself — slow, complete, without hurry to fill the silence with something else. The bow finishes. He straightens, returns to where he was standing, and that is the whole of it.

The word marrow lands into a room that was braced for a fourth explanation and got a body instead.

Bones

  1. Bodhidharma poses one question to four people and receives four different kinds of response, not four qualities of the same kind.
  2. Daofu's answer functions correctly at the level of doctrine — it states truth's structure — and is verified accordingly: skin.
  3. Zongchi's answer functions at the level of experience — it reports a felt event, unrepeatable, without claiming to systematize it — and is verified accordingly: flesh.
  4. Daoyu's answer functions at the level of negation — it dismantles the categories a grasping mind would reach for — and is verified accordingly: bones.
  5. Huike's response contains no proposition to verify. It cannot be ranked against the other three on their axis, because it does not occupy that axis; withholding a formulation is not a weaker formulation.
  6. Bodhidharma's four verdicts name four different relationships to the same understanding, not four scores on one scale — which is falsifiable against the record itself: nothing in his words ranks the four, and Huike's elevation to successor concerns transmission of the teaching entire, not superiority of Huike's "answer" over the other three.

Marrow

The difficulty with this story is that it has been misread the same way for roughly fifteen hundred years, by readers who are, in the moment of misreading it, doing exactly what the story warns against. Marrow gets heard as the grade Huike earned, the one that beat the other three, and the parable meant to dismantle a hierarchy becomes, in nearly every retelling, the clearest hierarchy in the whole tradition. That persistence is not a failure of readers. It is a disclosure about the kind of mistake being described.

The mistake is not stupidity. Daofu, Zongchi, and Daoyu were not wrong, and nothing in the story suggests Bodhidharma considered their answers deficient attempts at what Huike achieved. Each of them said something true and complete at the level they were speaking from. The mistake, if there is one to locate at all, belongs to the listener centuries later who cannot help hearing four ranked submissions to a single prize, because ranking is what evaluation feels like from the inside, even when the evaluator has explicitly declined to rank.

Which puts something uncomfortable in front of the reader of this very parable: understanding that the four are organs, not grades, is itself the kind of thing that can be affirmed in words — as skin, cleanly, in one breath — without it changing how the affirmation is heard. A person can state "there is no hierarchy here" with total sincerity and still feel, underneath the sentence, that marrow is the one they'd rather be told they have. The parable doesn't just describe four modes of knowing. It sets a trap calibrated to catch exactly the kind of mind that reads parables about non-hierarchy and immediately ranks itself against the students in it, wondering which one it would have been.

Huike's silence is not offered here as the strategy the other three should have used instead. A room in which all four disciples had bowed and said nothing would have contained no discernible difference between them, and no teaching about how skin, flesh, bones, and marrow differ from each other in kind. The lesson requires all four responses spoken and unspoken together, each one showing what the other three cannot show, which means the three explanations were never the warm-up act to Huike's silence. They were as necessary to the parable's completeness as the silence was.

Marginalia

Commentary written beside a text that is already finished — in the way Arabic scholars once filled the margins around Aristotle and Galen. Not a summary of the four rooms above. A second, smaller voice standing next to them.

Daofu's sentence could be set inside a hundred different teachings without altering a word of it. That portability is not a shortcoming — it's what correct doctrine does. It's also why skin is the layer every tradition can borrow free of charge.

Zongchi offers no method for having the vision again. A report that came with instructions would already be reaching toward doctrine — and would have earned skin instead of flesh.

Daoyu's negation dissolves the very ground a ranking would need to stand on. Which is exactly why it's the layer most often mistaken, by a reader in a hurry, for the whole teaching.

A note written beside Marrow is already skin again — language, offered about the one response that offered none. The commentator inherits Daofu's problem before finishing the first sentence.
